During my stay in Brighton, there were a few evenings where I didn’t really know what to do because everyone I used to hang out with already left to go back home. That’s when I remembered a walking tour through the city which takes you along all the secret and haunted locations in Brighton, and there are a lot.

In this blogpost I’m going to show you some of the supposedly haunted locations in Brighton and Hove and tell its story with it.

1. Cardinal Newman School on the Upper Drive in Hove. I used to live in the student house on the Upper Drive before I went to my host family so I was very interested in this story. The original building dates from 1877. For many years it was the Sacred Heart Convent. It is hardly surprising, therefore, that the site is said to be haunted by the spirit of a nun.

A former teacher, whilst alone in her office, felt the door to the room open. On getting up to see if anyone was there, found herself enter a cold pocket of air. She then witnessed an ill-defined shape, the size of a human, drift down the corridor and disappear.

On another occasion, when a group of girls were playing football, the ball landed on a patch of land that had been a burial ground of the former convent. As one of the girls reached for the ball, the vague figure of a nun appeared a few feet away. She seemed quite unthreatening with a kindly smile on her face. Moments later she vanished into the trees.

2. BRIGHTON'S BANDSTAND was first opened in 1884 and restored to its original specification to be reopened in 2009. Today it houses a café and is available as a venue for weddings and ceremonies. However, a shadow of darkness hangs about the place. The gaiety of its past has become overshadowed by the appearance of a terrifying and pitiful spectre.

The ghostly figure of a young woman, dressed in ragged attire, with a face said to be deathly pale, is thought to haunt the place. Many believe the phantom to be that of a homeless girl whose lifeless body was discovered there some years ago. This troubled and restless spirit has been seen on numerous occasions, always lingering about the bandstand.

3. THE DRUID’S HEAD is one of the most popular and welcoming of pubs in The Lanes, offering a good variety of beers, wines & spirits and hearty meals. However, it is also said to be the most haunted of Brighton taverns with many incidents of poltergeist activity being reported there.

Such phenomena appears to be particularly active at the moment. Most recently a glass was seen to literally fly from the shelf, a bottle was also witnessed moving of its own volition and a glass actually exploding!

I personally don’t believe in ghost stories but it’s interesting to hear about a place that looks like only good and happy things are going on.
